With Pope Francis due to arrive in an hour, an event has begun in Lukiškės Square in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius to honor victims of the 20th century’s totalitarian regimes and their families along with those who actively fought for human rights and for the nation’s freedom.
The event includes the reading of poetry and the performance of songs from the times of exile and of general repression under the Soviet regime. Participants include the Aidija choir and the Schola Cantorum Vilnensis school of Gregorian chant in a musical program crafted by the well-known Lithuanian folk singer Veronika Pavilionienė and choir director Romualdas Gražinis.
Before coming to the Lukiškės Square, the Holy Father stopped to pray in the territory of the historic Vilnius Ghetto in Holocaust Victims (Rudninku) Square.
